Monthly figures issued by Channel Tunnel operator Getlink have shown how the number of trucks travelling through the tunnel on the LeShuttle service declined by over 18% year-on-year in the first half of 2023.
The data shared by Getlink shows that the amount of truck traffic going through the Channel Tunnel in 2023 was lower every single month compared to the year before.
The economic slowdown, as well as the spike in truck traffic experienced last year due to P&O’s operational problems, have been cited as the key factors in the results.
“In June 2023, LeShuttle Freight carried 102,393 trucks against a backdrop of a relative slowdown in British household consumption, and an unfavourable base effect due to capacity reductions on the Short-Straits following the massive redundancies carried out by P&O in 2022,” said Getlink, explaining its latest monthly results.
Earlier in the year, Getlink also referred to social unrest in France as being a factor influencing the relative year-on-year decline in truck traffic.
