Last week, Southeast Jutland Police revealed that in one mere inspection at a lorry park near the border with Germany, as many as 50 drivers were found to have violated the ban on spending weekly rest in the cab. Representatives from Denmark's haulage industry have since praised the police's action and called for more checks to take place - both in Denmark and abroad.
Asked for comment on the inspections last week, John A. Skovrup, a representative of Denmark’s ITD haulage association, told Danish newspaper JydskeVestkysten:
“It is a problem, but it is not a new problem, and I have previously called for checks to be carried out at the Customs Square in Padborg.”
Before going on to praise the “good work” of the police department responsible for the checks, Skovrup added: “The more control the better, and it’s good to clamp down on the bad apples.”
The ITD Director wasn’t alone in praising the police.
Peter Therkelsen, director at HP Therkelsen, also told JydskeVestkysten: “I fully support the checks, because we would like to see fair competition. That is why there must also continue to be targeted checks. I would also like to see more checks around Europe. It should not only be in Denmark.”
