Electric trucks will soon be able to recharge while driving on France's A10 motorway, according to Vinci Autoroutes. The motorway operator is leading a consortium that plans to bring the technology to a 2km stretch of road near the Saint-Arnoult toll gate in the Paris region.

On one side of the road, an induction tech solution will be trialled, while on the other, conductor rail tech shall be tested.

Vinci Autoroutes says the the innovative dynamic charging solutions it is trialling have the capacity to reduce the size of truck batteries as well as reduce the constraints related to electric vehicles.

The project, which Vinci Autoroutes claims is the first of its kind on a motorway, aims to allow electric HGVs, as well as other types of electric vehicles (coaches, utility vehicles, passenger cars) to experiment with dynamic charging. If the solution is viable, the tech will then be installed more widely across the country’s road network.

Work will begin on the project this September. Its total budget is €26m, some of which will come from state funds.
