Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone will launch on February 27, 2023, with the roll out of financial support measures starting from December 12, 2022, announced the council on Monday.
From Monday, February 27, 2023, the Class C Clean Air Zone will begin charging non-compliant vehicles.
Charges will apply to light goods vehicles below Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol standards and also heavy goods vehicles which are below Euro 6 Diesel standards.
LGVs and HGVs that don’t comply with the requirement will be charged £50 daily.
The Clean Air Zone covers the inner ring road and city centre. A detailed interactive map can be found on the CAZ website.
In light of the cost-of-living crisis, the current difficulties with buying a compliant LGV and the volume of LGV applications expected to be processed, the Council has negotiated with the government to deliver additional temporary local exemptions from charges until June 5, 2023 for LGVs, the announcement adds.
As for financial support, a grant will be launched from December 12, 2022, to assist those affected by the charges will be launched. Eligible businesses and residents may be able to apply for financial support to upgrade to cleaner vehicles.
“We understand that this scheme will affect people and businesses in a variety of ways and we have successfully pressed Government for extra financial support in an effort to support Sheffielders to make this transition, recognising the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on our city. As a result, we have secured one of the best financial packages of any local authority,” commented Cllr Julie Grocutt, Co-Chair of the Transport Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, the announcement.
The Sheffield-Rotherham Clean Air Zone is a legally mandated directive from the central government. These are the cities that have already introduced such a zone or the launch is planned for the near future:
Bath
Birmingham
Bradford
Bristol (charging starts on 28 November 2022)
Greater Manchester(under review)
Portsmouth
Sheffield (charging starts in early 2023)
Tyneside – Newcastle and Gateshead (charging starts in winter: late 2022 to early 2023)
