During a recent roadside check, irregularities were detected that made officers suspicious that a tachograph in one of the haulier’s trucks may have been tampered with.

The vehicle was taken to a workshop for a thorough examination that led to the discovery that the tachograph had been modified in such a way that it recorded incorrect speeds and changed other values.

Specifically, the device’s motion sensor had been reworked and microchipped to allow for manipulation to be switched on and off remotely.

In the inspected truck and the haulier’s two other lorries, inspectors believe the manipulation meant the ABS system was not working. Inspectors found that the vehicles all had overheated brake components.

Moreover, the emission control (SCR) system on trucks were also found to be inoperative.
